A few years ago I helped our friends find a car for their daughter, it’s a 2007 Civic LX and she loves it.
I was swapping wheels back to summers on it yesterday and noticed that it has clearcoat failure along the back of the roof, not quite this bad but very noticeable.
I did a bit of google-fu this morning and find a 500+post thread on 8thcivic.com
http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/detaili…
Bummer. I guess she could take it to the dealership and see what they say. If not I might recommend a vinyl wrap.. Has anyone else fixed clearcoat failure without respraying the car?

Super glue. I stopped my old Kia (first car) from having a clearcoat failure on the bonnet by dripping some good old super glue into the peeling clear coat. Repaired the damaged bits and stopped the rest of the car from doing it.
Warning: Don’t use super glue on anything but a “beater” type car, results may vary.

I have two friends with the same age Civic and both have clear coat failure like this.
I’d say there may be a class action, though I guess non-exploding airbags are a little more important right now.

My family’s 08' coupes is worse. The clear is coming off pretty bad on the roof and it’s started to happen on the hood. Ita really surprising since the car barely gets driven and it’s usually parked in the garage. I think I might just vinyl wrap or plasti dip it myself.

Honda has always had rubbish clearcoats. It was so bad that they once had to recall the Accord for it.

My piece of Fit is doing the same. Apparently brakes aren’t the only thing Honda sucks at.

Very typical of these, even the fabled fiji blue on the Si s fade. It’s mainly due to Honda using water based paint in the US because epa laws. Where as cars like the fit, which are made out side the US, use oil based paint. Also why the Fit has more colors available.

Yep, same think has happened to my old ‘98 Accord. Looks horrid.

Honda did recall these cars for this issue as well as the infamous “crow feet”

My clear coat is in the beginning stages of starting to go... Right now it's just on the hood and the drivers door. Is it possible to repaint just the door ?

This is why we seal our cars. Use this:

And yes, Honda paint and clear has had notably bad quality control.

Honda paint is known for being very thin and having problems with clear coats and fading.
Properly repairing just the clear will be difficult. You might be able to scuff and blend the entire roof but I’d bet that the base is faded in those areas and it would turn out poor anyway.

I fixed it on my Si by trading it in on a Pontiac G8 GT.
I was looking at doing the wrap before I sold the car. The roof didn’t bother me that much, just seemed like a thing Hondas do. It was a great car and hopefully is still being a great car out there for someone else.

Clearcoat? More like Yearcoat, because that's how long it lasts.

BlueBat is recommended on the forums.. his site says $75 for the roof.

Never a recall just a TSB. Lots of BS to get anything repainted. I started that forum on 8th Civic.

yup! started the forum on 8th civic the paint was peeling off the c pillars by year 2. I’m not talking about fading, I’m talking flaking off down to primer, along with fading. Wasn’t like I didn’t take care of my car either or drove it through an acid pit. Was basically a showroom coat.

sealing doesn’t even work. Applied optimum paint coating and the sh*tty paint job even still failed.

I have a feeling proper detailing and care would have prevented this.
It's insane how easily Honda paint fades too with no care. I worked on a newer Fit with red paint and the fading was bad.

I agree, their on an annual car wash schedule and it drives me crazy.. haha.. Our 08 Subaru has better paint and that is saying something.

Really?
Yeah that’s pretty bad. And crazy from a car company usually known for good quality.

That’s why I don’t think Honda really has an “issue” with their paint, it’s more of the owners fault.
Actually, that may not be true. I didn't read the thread you posted, but unless people had issues three years later, AND washed their cars and kept them maintained, then they had an issue. But as the car is super old at this point, it's not Honda's fault, just as the faded red Fit isn't Honda's fault, because the pigment will fade if you don't protect it.

Too late for you but Race Glaze is amazing wax. Both my old red ‘93 Si and my current red ‘07 Si did not fade a bit throughout ownership. All I’ve done is wax once a year. As a bonus, I use it on my headlights and they look like new too! Available on Amazon or Ebay.
